Last week at DEFINE foods: “Building Your Natural Foods Pantry” Workshop with In-House Natural Foods Chef Erin Stewart, we discussed a whole new approach to cooking from scratch! What to buy, what to look for, and how to cook with more healthful ingredients.
Here are Erin’s top five tips:
1. Natural = whole, unprocessed, organic. Foods with no synthetic chemicals, additives or pesticides.
2. Sugar: avoid anything white or powdery, and say no to high fructose corn syrup. All refined and processed with no nutritional value.
3. Get your sodium from the sea! Sea veggies, like Nori and Dulce can easily be added to salads, soups and stir-frys. Opt for mineral-rich Celtic or Himalayan sea salt over table salt.
4.Sweeten with pure maple, raw honey or natural cane sugars, like succanant.
5. Go to your local farmers market weekly, prepare produce, grains and beans ahead of time to make cooking weeknights fresh and simple.
