Balance the body & mind

Homeostasis means keeping or maintaining a stable state. Keeping the body balanced in this way can reduce illness and disease while promoting optimal health and wellbeing. An imbalance within the body can be evidenced by problems associated with endocrine, heart, electrolyte issues and other toxins that can enter the bloodstream. This balanced state is not only imperative for achieving a physically healthy status, but also for being at your best for family, work, fun and overall daily activities.

Immunity and disease

We live in a world surrounded by germs, pathogens and toxins. Just because we can’t see some of these things with the naked eye doesn’t mean they don’t exist. If you’re germaphobic, you may realize the millions of infectious agents that surround us daily, but these things have been infiltrating our world for decades. The difference is that now we have a better understanding of how to avoid some of these pathogens and the body’s role in protecting us from harm.

Think of the immune system as a gatekeeper. It can recognize the difference between self (our own cells) versus non-self (pathogens, germs and other infectious agents). It keeps our body in balance and helps protect us from illnesses. This miraculous system can become weakened for a variety of reasons:

* Excess stress

* Diet high in fat, sugar and cholesterol

* Sleep deprivation or irregular sleep patterns

* Age (young–immature, old–weak systems)

* Hygiene habits

* Environment- temperature changes and exposure to toxins/chemicals

It’s no secret that germs are all around and while some of these things can’t be avoided, there’s still plenty more to do to protect our loved ones and us:

* Diet high in antioxidants (fresh fruits, veggies, and omega 3s)

* Adequate hydration

* Proper hand hygiene

* Sunshine

* Exercise

* Good multivitamin with vitamins A, C and E

Balance between the body and mind

Balance within the body is crucial for keeping us healthy. But, no matter what we do for our bodies, if our mind is stressed, our bodies are compromised. Emotions are closely linked to our physical state. There is continual communication between these two. For example, high levels of stress or irritation can stimulate the body to release a hormone called cortisol. High levels of this hormone can cause depletions of certain nutrients within the body that help you maintain homeostasis. When the hormone epinephrine is secreted in excess amounts, it directly affects the heart, blood pressure and other vital organs. So as you begin to think about all those germs that could be lurking around you remember to take a step back, close your eyes and breath a sigh of relief knowing that your state of mind plays a instrumental role in keeping your immunity balanced!

My training at DEFINE started before the first coat of paint ever went on the walls at the Tanglewood location, more than 3 years ago. My background – I was a competitive gymnast for 18 years; earned my doctorate in chiropractic; which was followed by a degree in nursing.
