Earth Art – Recycled Cork Display by Anthropologie and the CFCA
Thursday, June 2nd, 2011
You might have missed these amazing window displays that could’ve been seen at Anthropologie around Earth Day and last month. In honor of Earth Day, Anthropologie and the Cork Forest Conservation Alliance teamed up to promote cork recycling and the preservation of Mediterranean cork forests through artful window displays in Anthropologie stores across the country. For the displays, the CFCA donated 2 million recycled corks to be arranged into unique window displays.
The CFCA campaigns globally for the protection and preservation of the Mediterranean cork forests, its inhabitants and biodiversity, through education, direct action, and partnerships with communities, businesses and governments. And why are cork forests so important? They contain one of the world’s highest levels of forest biodiversity including endemic plants and endangered species such as the Iberian Lynx, the Iberian Imperial Eagle, and the Barbary Deer. It is also vital source of income for thousands of family farmers, who for generations have worked these forests. These forests absorb millions of tons of CO2 each year and are a vast provider of oxygen to our planet. The forests also provide the greatest defense against the desertification of this region. The cork forests are one of the most sustainable and environmentally harvested forests in the world.
Here is a ”behind the scenes” look at 3 Anthropologie stores to watch their creative geniuses, create amazing cork art window displays. 2.5 million natural wine corks were sent to 153 Anthropologie stores in the US, UK and Canada, to promote Earth Day and the cork forest conservation efforts of the Cork Forest Conservation Alliance.

Fashion Friday
Friday, January 21st, 2011
Active wear is here to stay! And what is hot this season is all about comfort, convenience, as well as style. Feeling great and looking great has never been so easy!
At DEFINE, we carry a variety of active wear that can easily transition into daily/evening wear! Here are a few affordable pointers to keep you looking great and feeling your very best.
1)Wear your favorite pair of riding boots with your fitted exercise pants or capri. This gives the appearance of a great pair of fashionable leggings. Add a chunky necklace and belt (or scarf around your waist) and NO ONE will know that you just came from the exercise studio
2)Accessorize with jackets and wraps this winter/Spring. Buy a great pair of basic fitted pants, a bright solid color top, and accessorize with a jacket that really makes a statement!
3)Tie-Dye/ombre and bright colors (think turquoise, fuscia, bright yellows) are all in this spring!

Gifts That Give Back
Tuesday, November 30th, 2010
Our tip for all the holiday shoppers this Tuesday, is to give your friends and family a gift that gives back. Not only will you brighten the day of the gift’s recipient ,but you’ll also make the world a little better and brighter. Here are a couple of things we’re thinking of gifting this season:

1. Kiva – Loans that Change Lives
We’ve been waiting for the right time to share with you this amazing website that allows you to lend to an entrepreneur around the globe, but Oprah beat us to it! The Kiva card was chosen as one of her favorite things for 2010!!! But if you haven’t already heard about Kiva from Oprah, here’s a little bit about the non-profit organization:
Kiva’s mission is to connect people, through lending, for the sake of alleviating poverty.
Kiva empowers individuals to lend to an entrepreneur across the globe. By combining microfinance with the internet, Kiva is creating a global community of people connected through lending.
Kiva was born of the following beliefs:
People are by nature generous, and will help others if given the opportunity to do so in a transparent, accountable way.
The poor are highly motivated and can be very successful when given an opportunity.
By connecting people we can create relationships beyond financial transactions, and build a global community expressing support and encouragement of one another.
For more information or to buy a Kiva gift card, visit the Kiva website.
2. Made with Love in Brazil – Fashion with a Heart
So, we first noticed these cool bracelets on a couple of our DEFINE instructors (shout out to Megan and Casey!) and thought the looked really cool. And then they told us about Made with Love, where the bracelets came from and what they support and we were hooked. But guess what…Rachel Ray beat us to this one! (Some of the necklaces and bracelets were featured on her show.) But if you didn’t catch that episode of RR, here is some information about Fashion with a Heart products:
Fashion with a Heart founder Mary Jane Marcasiano uses her fashion design and non-profit experience to create unique, handmade products that connect cultures and support women’s and children’s charities in Brazil , Africa and Haiti. Drawing on her background in non-profit she works with Brazilian NGOs purchasing goods that support women’s crafts in poor communities. She also directly supports NGOs that aid at risk children and youths by donating back a significant percentage of her sales. Marcasiano also provides direct scholarships to aspiring young Brazilian designers from under-privileged families.

3. WorldofGood.com – Where your shopping shapes the world.
What’s a list with out at least 3 items…so, here’s the 3rd: WorldofGood.com. We stumbled on this site as we were searching for a 3rd “giving gift” to share with you. (And it wasn’t on Oprah’s or Rachel Ray’s website!)
On this website, there are more than 15,000 eco- and socially conscious goods available. You can shop by gift category, or “purchase impact,” be it eco- , animal-, or people-friendly. Each product is comes with a short description, so you can see exactly where your money is going and who you are helping.
There are so many neat products on this site that it’s hard to choose a favorite…but let us know if you do! And happy shopping!
