We have a great offer on Groupon today and tomorrow for new clients! So if you haven’t tried a class yet or want to share the DEFINE fun with a friend, check it out!
Innovation makes life easier for everyone—carriages developed into cars, telegraphs developed into the Internet, and frozen water developed into snowpersons. Bring innovation into your workout with today’s Groupon to Define. Choose from the following options:
- For $30, you get two weeks of unlimited classes for one (a $62.50 value).
- For $54, you get two weeks of unlimited classes for two (a $125 value).
This Groupon is valid at the locations in Tanglewood and River Oaks.
Helmed by former All-American and National Team member of springboard and platform diving Henry “Hank” Richardson, Define’s qualified instructors focus on the mind and body alike, with six innovative courses that blend exercise styles. Definebody targets and tightens muscle groups with a one-hour fitness cocktail of yoga, Pilates, ballet, and core strengthening, and Definemind soothes with stretches. The one-hour Definebody&mind blends the former two classes in a mix as harmonious as peanut-butter-slathered piano keys. DefineExpress squeezes in a high-intensity half hour for an instant energy burst, Definebaby bonds mothers to their young, and Definecaliente uses Latin rhythms to shake up the body’s internal saltshaker.
The studio’s aesthetics—naturally insulating cork flooring, sustainable furniture, no VOC paint, and man-eating plants strictly trained not to eat people—align with its organic aim toward fitness. Classes are offered seven days a week; view a complete online schedule for Tanglewood or River Oaks.

Workshop Wednesday
Wednesday, August 24th, 2011
We have some awesome workshops coming up at DEFINE!
Most notably, this weekend, April is holding her DEFINEdefense workshop at the Tanglewood studio. And Houston Tidbits even gave this workshop a shout-out! Here’s what they had to say:
DEFINE Your Defense Mechanisms
August 27 and September 17
Don’t put yourself in a precarious position. DEFINE presents fundamentals of self defense and hands-on techniques from a cutie female mixed martial arts specialist. More.
And since we received so many requests, April will hold the defense work again at our River Oaks studio. So, if you haven’t been able to make it to DEFINEdefense, you have one more chance! Third times a charm!
Then, if that’s not enough for ya…check out our upcoming Parenting Workshop, starting in September. During this 3 week, 6 session series, Claire and Lizzy will teach you “how to talk so kids will listen and listen so kids will talk”. You will gain practical, effective methods of communication that will make your relationship with your kids less stressful and more rewarding.
Some topic that will be discussed include:
- How to listen to-and understand-your child’s concerns
- How to have cooperation in your family-without nagging
- How you and your child can deal with feelings
- How to find alternatives to punishment
- How to help your child attain a positive self-image
And if you sign-up before September 1st for this Parenting Workshop, you can take advantage of the discounted price of $130/couple. For more information or to register for this workshop, click here.

Workout Wednesday
Wednesday, August 10th, 2011
Reading the new September (SEPTEMBER! Where has the summer gone!), Natural Health magazine, I came across an article about reasons why you should start weight training. A lot of the reasons I already knew – increasing your metabolism, maintaining bone mass, preventing aches and pains. But one really stood out – Weight training makes you more flexible.
Yes! I know, I was shocked too! Well, research shows that strength training using your full range of motion may be even better than static stretching when it comes to building overall flexibility. In a recent study, college students did either full range resistance training or static stretching three times a week for five weeks. In the end, the group who stretched didn’t increase their flexibility any more than the group that lifted weights. In some cases, those students who spent time lifting weights experienced greater gains in flexibility. (You can find more information on this study here.)
According to Jim Whitehead , Ed.D., associate professor of physical education, exercise science and wellness at the University of North Dakota, “As you lift a weight, your muscle contracts; and as you lower the weight over the full range of motion, your muscle stretches, which is where you get the flexibility benefits. And if you’re flexible, you have increased range of motion in your joints, even as you start to stiffen with age.”

Every Little Bit Counts
Wednesday, August 3rd, 2011
It’s good too know that when it comes to fitness, the little things count.
We recently read in an Atlantic article that a new study published in the journal Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise suggests that, contrary to what many people believe, strenuous exercise isn’t the only way to get in shape. It turns out that short walks and other everyday tasks can matter just as much. They found that those who exerted enough energy by doing over 30 minutes of moderate physical activity may reduce their risk for cardiovascular disease by 15 percent. So, you could do a lot of little things to increase the amount of activity you get everyday and get some of the great benefits of exercise!
And to get you motivated to get physical, watch this video! (It’s good for a laugh!)
And if you need more motivation, check out these tips from from athletes, trainers and more!

How to make your own sports drink
Tuesday, July 26th, 2011
Sports drinks, think Gatorade and Powerade, are intended to replace water and electrolytes lost through sweating during exercise. And to do that, these refueling beverages need to provide three things: water, electrolytes (especially sodium) and carbohydrates. Electrolyte replacement promotes proper rehydration, which is important in delaying the onset of fatigue during exercise, and as the primary fuel utilized by exercising muscle, carbohydrates are important in maintaining exercise and sport performance.
The drinks can help if an athlete is exercising vigorously for more than an hour or if competing in a tournament on a hot, humid day (uhmmm, hello Houston!) but in most cases they’re unnecessary (especially for kids) on the sports field.
All that being said, it’s easier than you might think to concoct your own sports drink. And here’s a simple recipe! (Thanks for forwarding this article to us Lauren!)
