Grocery Shopping Like the Jetson’s

Thursday, September 23rd, 2010

While I was looking for something deep and thought provoking to share with you guys (it’s Thoughtful Thursday!), I came across this article, Urban Agriculture: Harvested Produce at the Grocery Store and thought…I’ve gotta share this, it would be crazy to grocery shop like Judy Jetson (or did Rosie do all the shopping?).

Here’s the gist of the article: Some smarties came up with this idea called Agropolis -  an urban agricultural venue with a grocery store, restaurant and farm, all under the same roof.

In this grocery store of the future, hydroponic, aeroponic and aquapoinic farming will be combined to grow vegetables without soil in an urban environment.  Though I’m not really sure what all those big words mean, while shopping, people can see produce growing right in front of them and have the opportunity to walk away with that same food, with minimal harvesting required.  And then the aquaculture tanks are needed so that nutrients from the fish in the tanks can go to feed the plants in the store, making the entire set-up one vibrant, crazy cool, living ecosystem.

So how would all this look, you ask? Kind of like this:

Upon walking into an Agropolis store, you would immediately see walls of green around you. Vegetables would be growing on the walls at every corner and below your feet would be a giant tilapia tank where fish work in unison with the vegetables in an aquaponic system. The best part is that the only expedition your produce will undergo is from the store to your home. Absolutely zero travel from farm to store will transpire.

And while there are a ton of obstacles to this concept store, it is a neat concept…and maybe one day we’ll all have a Rosie going to the Agropolis store for us!

Mommies to Be

Wednesday, September 22nd, 2010

As you might have noticed, we have a lot of mommies to be that take class.

And even one of our instructors, Lori was recently preggo and had her baby boy about 6 weeks ago. Lori’s story is amazing! She taught and took DEFINEbody classes throughout her pregnancy and on Saturday, 2 days before she had baby David, she taught 2 classes and took a class! Just to brag a little more about how incredible Lori is, her delivery was all natural and she said it only took her 4-5 pushes before David came into the world.

From my years of teaching, I have heard this same labor and delivery story from clients several times, so I would encourage any mommy to be to continue moving throughout your pregnancy!

(But I realize everyone and every pregnancy is unique, and I want to make sure we are all as cautious as needed. So, moms to be, be sure to talk to your doctor and heed their advice. But also be aware that a huge majority of our pregnant clients feel that class actually contributes to a healthy pregnancy, a fast delivery, and a speedy recovery.)

With all that said, we’ve gotten a lot of questions about taking class while pregnant and we want to let all the mom’s to be know of the different variations for pregnant clients.

1st Trimester - No “twisting” and no movements where your head is below your heart. Other than that, it is safe to do all of the exercises in class, but you may want to “under achieve” on the abdominal work. Activate the muscles, but don’t feel like you have to fatigue the muscles.

2nd trimester – Same as above…PLUS for Abdominals: You will want to start using a ball behind your back for all of the abdominal exercises with your feet on the floor. For the flat back section. You need to listen to your own body. If there is ever a point when it is uncomfortable for your back, belly, or anywhere, be sure to sit up and place the ball behind your back. The “curl” position we utilize in class is great for pregnant women because it engages the muscles that women use during child birth as well as helps to lengthen your lower back for your own comfort.

3rd Tri-mester – Same as both the 1st and 2nd trimesters…AND: Here we are a little more cautious of not over stretching. Because the hormones in your body are preparing you for childbirth, it is common for you to experience an increase in flexibility. We want to be sure we don’t over stretch but continue to lengthen the lower back.

And mom’s to be, if you have any questions about modification, be sure to speak with your DEFINE instructor.

Tuesday Tip – Playlist Power

Tuesday, September 21st, 2010

Unleash the Power of Music

You probably know that listening to a good song can improve your mood. You smile a little, start tapping your foot and maybe throw in a dance move if you’re feeling crazy.

Well, when you’re exercising, listening to a good song can not only improve your mood, it can make you work a little harder and maybe run a little faster as you get in the “zone”. And this isn’t just hearsay, it’s PROVEN! Research shows that music can divert your mind from sensations of fatigue at low and moderate levels of intensity, meaning you can go longer without feeling tired. It’s like a super power!

So, we’ll CRANK UP the tunes in class and you’ll be able to hold that chair position just a little longer!

But if you’re not feeling the songs we’re playing in class, please let us know your POWER SONG and we’ll try to add it to our next playlist!

1968!

Thursday, September 16th, 2010

Did you know that some information on nutrition labels (the thing on the side of your cereal box) are based on daily requirements from 1968? YIKES!!! This means we are currently using information based on research and labeling done in and prior to 1968!

I know that everyone loved the 60′s but this is taking it a little too far!

I also know that they tell you that you have to read nutrition labels carefully and this normally has to do with tricky serving sizes. But the potential inaccuracies in the % Daily Value you see on the label has no disclaimer!  How are we supposed to know that since the late 60′s, some items have gone up in requirements such as daily intakes of Vitamin C and folate. And some have gone down like sodium and Vitamin A.  I mean a lot of things change with research, new understanding and TIME (40 years!).

(Here’s a fun fact from 1968: it’s the year that the first Big Mac was served for 49 cents!)

So next time you check out a food label and look at the dietary requirements (%), think twice about relying on it.

For more information on RDA’s, DRI’s, DV’s and DI’s (or if you just want to know what all those abbreviations mean), you can visit www.mypyramid.gov .
